Taylor Swift’s 2011 Book Donation Helps Pennsylvania Library Circulate 1.82 Lakh Items
Fifteen years after Taylor Swift donated 6,000 books to avert budget cuts in Pennsylvania, the Reading Public Library reports a massive surge in community engagement and digital access.

READING, US: In October 2011, pop star Taylor Swift donated 6,000 books valued at $68,000 to the Reading Public Library system in Pennsylvania to counter severe municipal budget cuts. Fifteen years later, the institution reports that the contribution helped sustain its operations, with the network circulating over 1.82 lakh items and engaging more than 27,000 programme participants in 2025.
Swift, who grew up in nearby Wyomissing, learned of the financial struggles facing the Berks County library branches through local news reports. At the time, Reading was a city grappling with economic difficulties, and local government budget cuts threatened to close public library branches [1, 3]. To assist, the singer partnered with children’s publisher Scholastic Inc. to supply the shelves [4, 5]. Reflecting on the gesture, Swift wrote on her website, "These days, I've been trying to classify my thoughts into two categories: 'Things I can change,' and 'Things I can't,'... It seems to help me sort through what to really stress about".
The 6,000 new books, comprising young adult and children’s titles, were selected by local librarians to ensure they met community needs [3, 4]. The donation was distributed equally among the main downtown library and three neighbourhood branches. Each book was marked with a white star on its spine—though one retrospective report described it as a gold star—and a special bookplate inside the front cover recognising the gift [1, 3, 4, 5].
According to the Reading Public Library’s 2025 Annual Appeal report, the system has significantly expanded its community services since the donation. In 2025, the library circulated 1.82 lakh physical and digital items. It also recorded 77,812 public computer sessions, providing crucial internet access for job seekers and students. Furthermore, 27,452 individuals attended general programmes, while 3,207 young children participated in early childhood reading initiatives.
The library system now depends on a mix of local government funding and private donations to maintain these expanded services. Staff members provide targeted assistance, including one-on-one digital skills lessons for adults changing careers, help with mobile phone enrolment for older people on low incomes, and home book delivery for residents in assisted care facilities.
The longevity of Swift’s philanthropy highlights the critical role of private donations in sustaining public infrastructure during fiscal crises. While the initial injection of books addressed an immediate shortage, the library’s evolution into a broader community hub demonstrates how foundational support can catalyse long-term institutional resilience.
Fifteen years after the initial donation, the Reading Public Library continues to operate from its main branch at 100 South Fifth Street, serving as a central resource for education and public engagement in central Pennsylvania. Swift’s early intervention not only preserved access to literature but also laid the groundwork for the library's modern role as a vital community anchor.
