PUNE — NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) MLA Rohit Pawar has issued a stern warning to the Maharashtra government, cautioning that abandoning lakhs of MPSC aspirants will make the upcoming protests highly costly for the ruling dispensation.
Speaking as the agitation entered its eleventh day in Pune, Pawar accused the Chief Minister of sacrificing the future of students merely to protect a personal friend, referring to the embattled MPSC chairman.
The protests, triggered by allegations of severe irregularities and paper leaks in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations, have now reached a critical juncture.
Agitating aspirants have consistently demanded the immediate resignation of MPSC Chairman Vivek Bhimanwar and a transparent, independent re-evaluation of the entire recruitment process.
Despite the growing public outcry, the state government’s perceived inaction has fueled deep anger among the youth, leading to sustained demonstrations across the city.
Escalating his rhetoric, Pawar sharply criticized the Pune Police for registering FIRs against 15 protesting students instead of initiating action against the officials allegedly responsible for the administrative lapses.
In a dramatic gesture of solidarity, the MLA confronted authorities at the Vishrambaug police station, demanding that an FIR be registered against him instead of the agitating students.
He further warned that if the administration continues to harass the protesters, the demonstration will be shifted to the highly sensitive Alka Chowk on Tilak Road, which would severely disrupt city traffic and daily life.
Pawar also issued a strict deadline for the government to initiate meaningful dialogue with student representatives, failing which he threatened to call for a massive "Pune Bandh."
Political analysts observe that Pawar’s aggressive stance is a calculated move to consolidate youth support ahead of future electoral battles, positioning his party as the primary champion of Maharashtra's students.
By framing the narrative around the Chief Minister protecting an ally at the expense of lakhs of aspirants, the opposition is effectively tapping into deep-seated frustrations over unemployment and administrative opacity.
Furthermore, allegations that the government attempted to pressure coaching classes in regions like Latur to curb the protests highlight the lengths to which the administration might go to suppress dissent.
However, the recent splitting of student groups over specific tactical demands, such as changes to the exam pattern, presents a challenge to maintaining a unified, long-term agitation.
As the deadline looms, the Maharashtra government faces mounting pressure to address the MPSC crisis decisively.
Failure to engage with the agitating students or provide a credible roadmap for reform could transform a localized grievance into a statewide political upheaval, testing the ruling coalition's ability to manage youth unrest.
