NEW DELHI: Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore sparked a political controversy on Thursday after stating that India would support Pakistan in the event of a military conflict between the neighbouring country and the United States. The remark, made during a public event, drew immediate condemnation from the Congress, which demanded an explanation from the central leadership regarding the ruling party's stance on national security.

Speaking at the event, Rathore attempted to contextualise his statement by distinguishing between international conflicts and domestic issues. "We all need to understand this. Look, when it comes to India, I say that if there is a war breaks out between America and Pakistan today, we are with Pakistan because it is our neighbour," Rathore said, as reported by India Today. He further added, "But when it comes to an issue among ourselves, we stand with our India. Right? That is what we need to understand".

The statement quickly gained traction on news platforms and social media, leading to widespread debate over the geopolitical implications of aligning with a historically adversarial neighbour. The Congress party seized upon the comments to attack the BJP, with spokesperson Shama Mohamed questioning whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah concurred with Rathore's assessment.

"The BJP’s love for the terrorist nation Pakistan, which kills our soldiers and our people, has come on display once again," Mohamed stated, demanding to know what disciplinary action would be taken against the state unit chief. Meanwhile, Rathore used the platform to pivot his criticism towards the opposition, accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of attempting to foment unrest within the country. He alleged that certain foreign forces were mobilising individuals through foreign funding to disrupt India's developmental progress and stability amid its rising global influence.

Analysis: The incident highlights the volatile nature of political rhetoric in India, where statements on foreign policy and national security are frequently leveraged for domestic electoral gains. By invoking a hypothetical war with the US and subsequent alignment with Pakistan, Rathore's remarks stray from the traditional diplomatic tightrope maintained by New Delhi, which carefully balances its strategic partnership with Washington against its complex bilateral relationship with Islamabad. The Congress's swift reaction underscores how quickly such deviations from established foreign policy orthodoxy can be utilised to question a party's patriotic credentials.

As the controversy continues to dominate political discourse, the BJP's central leadership has yet to issue an official clarification or distance itself from the Rajasthan chief's comments. The unfolding row is likely to remain a focal point of opposition attacks in the coming days, keeping the spotlight on the ruling party's internal messaging and its approach to geopolitical narratives.
