Israel launches limited counterterrorism operation in Hebron after two soldiers killed
The Israeli military has initiated a targeted operation in the occupied West Bank following a deadly shooting, imposing a full territorial lockdown just days before a crucial national election.

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL: Israeli military forces have initiated a targeted counterterrorism operation in the Hebron area of the occupied West Bank following a shooting attack that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers [1, 3]. The offensive, accompanied by a comprehensive lockdown of the territory, comes just days before a critical national election [1, 4].
The incident occurred on Friday morning near the Yehuda Junction, close to Hebron, when two Palestinian gunmen opened fire [1, 2]. Israeli forces neutralised both attackers, who were armed with an M16 rifle and a handgun, but confirmed the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to three others [1, 4]. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site and ordered a full closure of the West Bank, restricting movement across all crossings [3, 4].
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet domestic security agency stated that the operation involves precise searches to dismantle weapons and infrastructure. Residents in the affected zones are permitted to exit through three designated checkpoints following security screening, though those raising suspicion will face further questioning. Netanyahu announced that troops would conduct house-to-house searches, evacuate residents, and demolish structures, adding that new settlement infrastructure would be built in the area. Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich confirmed that building demolitions were underway, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority.
This escalation highlights the centrality of security in the upcoming Tuesday parliamentary elections, where Netanyahu is facing a tight race to retain his position. By pledging operations on a scale unseen since the 1967 war and comparing the strategy to previous campaigns in northern West Bank refugee camps, the leadership is signalling a hardline approach to appeal to right-wing voters. Meanwhile, the militant group Hamas praised the shooting as a "heroic operation" without formally claiming responsibility, underscoring the persistent cycle of violence in the region.
The situation remains tense as the military operation is expected to continue for several days, with security forces also conducting raids in dozens of locations across the territory. According to data from the Palestinian Health Ministry cited by international reporters, over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023, while Israeli figures indicate at least 51 Israelis have died in the same period. The long-term implications of this latest crackdown on the already volatile territory remain uncertain as the election approaches.
