COIMBATORE: A Class XI student from a Scheduled Caste community died by suicide at his residence in Coimbatore, prompting his family to allege severe caste-based discrimination and harassment at his government-aided school [1, 3]. Police have registered a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested a teacher in connection with the incident [3, 4].

The student, identified as Akilan, was found dead at his home in the Peelamedu area on October 21, shortly after returning to classes following the Puja holidays [1, 3]. His mother, Kousalya, filed a police complaint alleging that the boy was subjected to casteist slurs and physical assault by classmates, which was allegedly instigated by a teacher. According to the first information report, the class teacher, Vijayakumar, had asked the class which students consumed beef, following which Akilan was targeted by his peers.

The Peelamedu police have booked the school's headmaster, Arunkumar, the class teacher, and two students for abetment of suicide and voluntarily causing hurt [3, 4]. As reported by The Hindu, the teacher was arrested on Thursday, while the investigation continues into the roles of the principal and other staff members. The family alleged that the headmaster failed to take action despite prior complaints regarding the harassment.

Addressing the media, a senior police officer stated, "We are investigating the role of the school, the principal, class teacher and any others. We have filed a case under the SC/ST Act". When asked if any teacher had been arrested, the officer confirmed, "If required, we will". Police noted that the parents had approached the school administration regarding the issue before the tragedy but had not lodged a formal police complaint until after the student's death.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges in addressing caste-based discrimination and dietary policing within educational institutions in Tamil Nadu. The invocation of the SC/ST Act highlights the severity of the allegations, shifting the focus from a standard suicide investigation to a probe into systemic institutional failure. The alleged minimal intervention by the school administration, as noted by police sources, raises critical questions about the efficacy of grievance redressal mechanisms in government-aided schools.

Furthermore, the trigger for the alleged discrimination—rooted in the family's caste and food choices—points to deep-seated social prejudices that continue to affect marginalized students in academic settings. The failure of the school management to intervene when the family initially complained suggests a lack of accountability among educational authorities tasked with protecting vulnerable students.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the harassment and the school's response to the family's initial complaints. The post-mortem examination is being conducted at the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore, and police have stated that further arrests will be made if required based on the evidence gathered [1, 3]. The state education department is also expected to review the administrative lapses at the aided school.
