Samajwadi Party functionary Pawan Yadav shot dead in Prayagraj
Unidentified assailants on a motorcycle killed former gram pradhan Pawan Yadav in a crowded area of Prayagraj, prompting the Samajwadi Party to demand justice and question the state's law and order situation.

PRAYAGRAJ: Unidentified assailants on a motorcycle shot dead Samajwadi Party functionary Pawan Yadav in Prayagraj on Tuesday. The 46-year-old former gram pradhan was targeted in a crowded area near Handia road as he was about to step out of his car, police said. The attackers fled the scene immediately after opening fire.
Yadav, a resident of Mungraw in Handia, was a prominent local leader who also served as the former president of the Handia Pradhan Sangh. The brazen nature of the attack, which took place in close proximity to a local police station, has triggered widespread anger among party workers and local residents. Authorities have cordoned off the area to collect forensic evidence and begin the investigation.
DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh confirmed the incident and stated that the motive behind the killing is currently not clear. Singh told reporters that cops are probing the case on all angles, indicating that investigators are examining all possible leads, including personal enmity, property disputes, and political rivalry. A manhunt has been launched across the district to trace and apprehend the bike-borne assailants before they can evade the dragnet.
The incident has quickly escalated into a political issue in Uttar Pradesh. SP spokesperson Dan Bahadur Madhur alleged that the murder is part of a broader pattern of violence in the state. Madhur stated that the continued killings across the state, particularly of people from the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) community, had exposed the government’s claim of zero tolerance.
Demanding strict action, the SP spokesperson called for the immediate arrest of the killers and the provision of security to the victim’s family. Furthermore, Madhur demanded financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh for the deceased's dependents. The party has indicated that it will agitate if the administration fails to deliver swift justice.
The murder of a former local body leader in a populated area near a police station underscores the persistent challenges regarding law and order in the region. For the ruling dispensation, such high-profile incidents often invite sharp criticism from the Opposition, which uses them to question the administration's governance and security apparatus. The SP's demand for financial compensation and the specific framing of the victim's identity around the PDA community indicate that the party intends to leverage the incident politically to consolidate its core voter base ahead of future electoral contests in Uttar Pradesh.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities face mounting pressure to swiftly apprehend the assailants and establish a clear motive. The family of the deceased awaits justice, while the political climate in the state remains tense. The outcome of this probe will be closely watched to see if it can restore public confidence in the local security infrastructure.
