PUNE: Wanowrie police have booked four men for allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old student and his parents following a minor two-wheeler collision in Kedarinagar on Thursday evening. The accused, who were joined by accomplices during the altercation, face charges including attempt to murder and outraging the modesty of a woman.

The incident occurred when the student and his parents were returning home on separate two-wheelers. A motorcyclist, later identified as one of the accused, allegedly rode recklessly close to the student’s vehicle, leading to a physical brush between the two. Following the minor collision, the motorcyclist allegedly abused and physically assaulted the student.

The student’s parents, who identified themselves as lawyers to the attacker, intervened to stop the assault. In response, the primary accused allegedly threatened the couple and summoned three accomplices to the spot. The additional men arrived and assaulted the father with a blunt object, while also pushing the mother and allegedly touching her inappropriately before fleeing the scene.

The Wanowrie police station registered the case on Friday under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These include Section 109 for attempt to murder, Section 74 for assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, and Section 118 for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.

The registration of attempt to murder charges indicates the severity with which the police are treating the use of a blunt object and the coordinated nature of the attack. The incident highlights a concerning trend of disproportionate retaliation over minor traffic disputes in urban areas, where routine collisions quickly escalate into violent mob assaults.

Furthermore, the specific allegation of inappropriate touching against the mother adds a layer of gender-based violence to the road rage incident, prompting stricter legal provisions under the new criminal laws. The involvement of multiple assailants transforming a simple traffic dispute into a coordinated attack underscores the volatility of such encounters.

Law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on stringent BNS provisions to deter such public violence, ensuring that mob justice and road rage are met with severe legal consequences. Authorities have launched a comprehensive search operation to apprehend the four primary accused and their accomplices.

Investigators are expected to review local CCTV footage to trace the movements of the suspects and establish the exact sequence of events leading to the violent clash.
