BENGALURU: eMudhra, a Bengaluru-based digital trust company, has expanded its operations from a foundational certifying authority to a comprehensive service provider for government agencies, banks, and major technology firms. Founded in 2008, the enterprise secured a significant milestone in 2022 when it went public, marking its transition in the digital identity sector.

The company operates as a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) accredited by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Its services are governed by the Information Technology Act, 2000, ensuring that its digital signatures hold the same legal validity as handwritten signatures across Indian courts and regulatory bodies. The company’s operations are detailed in its Certification Practice Statement, which outlines the lifecycle management of the certificates it issues.

The core objective of its consumer servicing model is to enable individuals and organisations to manage their financial and statutory obligations through secure, technology-enabled processes. Over the years, the firm has developed technology engines to manage the exponentially growing Indian consumer base, facilitating secure online financial and e-commerce transactions.

A key development for the company occurred in 2015, when it was empanelled as an electronic signature service provider for Aadhaar-based services. This integration opened avenues for extensive digital documentation needs across various sectors. Today, the firm offers multiple classes of digital signatures, including Class 2, Class 3, and Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) certificates, catering to diverse security and functionality requirements.

Its client roster now includes prominent public and private entities such as the State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation, Tata Consultancy Services, and Infosys. Furthermore, the enterprise provides electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) services, allowing users to verify identities using Aadhaar or PAN without the need for physical hardware tokens. The digital signature certificates bind the user's identity to a cryptographic key pair, utilising the RSA algorithm to generate secure hash values for authentication.

The shift from traditional hardware tokens to cloud-based digital signatures represents a broader industry transition towards paperless compliance. By integrating with enterprise software platforms, the company has reduced the friction associated with physical document processing. Furthermore, these integrations allow organisations to streamline their workflows significantly, achieving faster turnaround times and reducing operational costs associated with manual processing. These certificates are widely utilised for the e-filing of income tax returns, e-tendering, and e-procurement.

As India’s digital infrastructure continues to expand, the demand for robust identity verification and secure electronic transactions is expected to rise. The company’s established footprint in both government and private sectors positions it to capitalise on the ongoing digitisation of statutory and financial obligations across the country.
