DHUBRI: Assam Police in Dhubri district have arrested a suspected Bangladeshi national with alleged links to a cross-border illegal activity network, prompting a broader investigation into smuggling and financial trails along the international boundary. The arrest has intensified scrutiny on the porous border regions, where authorities are working to dismantle syndicates involved in illicit trade and money laundering.

Robial Sheikh was apprehended by Lakshiganj police in the Udmari area and initially questioned at the Bilasipara police station to establish his identity and nationality. He was subsequently transferred to Dhubri for further interrogation by the Crime Branch. Bilasipara Officer-in-Charge Biswajit Bhadra stated that Sheikh claimed to be a resident of Lalmonirhat in Bangladesh, a region situated near the Dhubri district border. Police sources indicate that Sheikh is suspected of being connected to a larger network facilitating cross-border illegal activities.

This development follows a similar apprehension in June, when the Border Security Force’s 89th Battalion detained 32-year-old Muqtar Hussain from Dinajpur, Bangladesh. Hussain was later arrested by Assam Police in Dhubri and was suspected of involvement in illegal cross-border cattle smuggling and anti-national activities.

Concurrently, a parallel investigation into the financial aspects of cross-border cattle smuggling has yielded significant results. Dhubri Police arrested 51-year-old lodge owner Sahad Ali Sheikh while probing an alleged hawala and money-laundering network. Investigators are currently examining his financial dealings, mobile phone records, and suspected contacts in Bangladesh to trace the movement of funds. According to reports, digital evidence, including Bangladesh-linked phone numbers, transaction records, and WhatsApp communications, led authorities to a wider suspected network, resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals so far.

The Dhubri district shares a sensitive international border with Bangladesh, making it a critical zone for national security. To address the unique challenges of such regions, the Ministry of Home Affairs implements the Border Area Development Programme. The programme aims to saturate border areas with essential infrastructure and bridge socio-economic gaps, thereby improving the overall security environment. However, the recent arrests underscore the persistent threat posed by well-organized smuggling syndicates that exploit local infrastructure, such as lodges, to facilitate illegal trade and route illicit funds.

As the Crime Branch and local police continue to interrogate the suspects and analyze digital evidence, authorities are expected to map the full extent of the syndicate. The ongoing probe will likely focus on dismantling the financial pipelines that sustain cross-border smuggling, ensuring that regional development and security initiatives remain uncompromised.
