DODA, Jammu & Kashmir — The receding snows in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district have unveiled a grim reminder of the region’s persistent security challenges. Security forces have recovered the decomposed remains of a suspected Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operative, along with a sophisticated M4 rifle, in the remote Divshetar area of the Seoj Dhar forest.
The discovery was made on Saturday after local residents, navigating the rugged terrain, spotted the remains and immediately alerted the authorities.
A swift joint operation involving the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police was subsequently launched to secure the site, cordon off the area, and initiate a preliminary forensic examination.
Intelligence assessments indicate that the individual was likely neutralized during a previous, unconfirmed encounter in the snow-capped hills.
The extreme winter conditions are believed to have preserved the body and effectively concealed it from routine search grids until the recent seasonal thaw exposed the site.
Recovered alongside the remains was an M4 carbine, which sources indicate is equipped with night-vision capabilities, underscoring the advanced weaponry occasionally smuggled across the Line of Control.
The presence of such a specialized weapon suggests the operative was part of a well-equipped module tasked with sustaining prolonged militant activities in the volatile Pir Panjal region.
"This recovery is a significant intelligence lead," noted a senior police official involved in the investigation. "We are actively cross-referencing the recovered weapon’s serial number and conducting DNA analysis to establish the individual’s identity and link him to specific past incidents or dormant modules."
The Seoj Dhar forest has historically been a favored transit and hideout route for militant groups attempting to establish footholds in the Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts. The area's dense canopy and challenging topography have frequently complicated counter-insurgency operations, making it a persistent focus for security agencies.
This discovery coincides with a broader, intensified grid-down operation by security forces in the Chenab valley, following a series of recent encounters aimed at dismantling overground worker networks and flushing out lingering threats.
The recovery not only eliminates a potential operational threat but also provides crucial forensic evidence that could unravel the logistical supply chains of proscribed outfits.
As the investigation progresses, security grids in the Divshetar sector have been further tightened. Authorities are urging locals to remain vigilant, emphasizing that community cooperation remains the most potent weapon in neutralizing hidden threats in the high-altitude forests of the region.
