iPhone 18 Pro Review: Variable Aperture Camera and A20 Pro Chip Redefine Mobile Photography
CUPERTINO/NEW DELHI — Apple's September 9 "Surprise and Shine" event delivered what the company claims is its "biggest camera improvement in years," and after examining the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, it's clear the tech giant isn't exaggerating. The headline feature is unmistakable: a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture—a first for any iPhone. Six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, move between four aperture settings to automatically adjust depth of field and lighting conditions.

But here's what truly matters for professionals: you can now manually control aperture, shutter speed, and white balance directly in the Camera app, complete with a histogram for precise exposure checking.
The A20 Pro Advantage
Powering these capabilities is the A20 Pro, Apple's first 2-nanometer chip for iPhone. The six-core CPU features two "desktop-class" super-cores delivering up to 20% faster performance, while the seven-core GPU offers 40% improved graphics processing compared to the A19 Pro.
But raw speed isn't the whole story. Apple has implemented a next-generation vapor chamber cooling system with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro, enabling up to 40% higher sustained performance during intensive tasks like 4K video recording.
Battery Life That Actually Delivers
Apple's battery claims are typically conservative, but the numbers here are impressive. The iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers up to 45 hours of video playback—the longest in iPhone history—while the standard Pro model achieves 36 hours.
Even more noteworthy: the iPhone 18 Pro can charge to 50% in approximately 15 minutes, and five minutes of wired charging on the Pro Max provides around seven hours of video playback.
Pro Controls for Professionals
The revamped Camera app, developed with input from Halide co-founder Sebastiaan de With, finally gives photographers the manual controls they've been requesting.
The new Pro controls interface lets you adjust:
Aperture (up to f/4.0)
Shutter speed
White balance
Exposure via real-time histogram
Photographic Styles now include texture and grain controls, while Cinematic mode can apply effects after capture at up to 60fps.
For videographers, both models support 4K120 ProRes recording—a feature Apple surprisingly omitted from its PR materials but remains crucial for professional filmmaking.
Apple Reference Image: Combating AI Manipulation
In an era of deepfakes and AI-generated content, Apple introduces Reference Image—a C2PA-style provenance system.
The Main camera's new sensor signs data at the moment of capture, and Private Cloud Compute builds an unalterable reference image viewable in the Photos app. This allows users to verify whether an image has been edited, addressing growing concerns about image authenticity.
However, Reference Image capture won't be available at launch in the EU or China due to regulatory considerations, though users in those regions can still view and develop reference images.
Apple Intelligence Integration
Both models ship with iOS 27 and full Apple Intelligence support. The redesigned Siri AI can leverage personal context from messages, emails, and photos to answer questions or perform actions.
New AI-powered features include:
Spatial Reframing: Adjust photo composition after capture
Extend: Expand image boundaries intelligently
Enhanced Clean Up: Remove unwanted objects with photorealistic results
Image Playground: Now offers photorealistic AI-generated imagery
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 for the 256GB variant in India, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at Rs 1,79,900.
Both models are available in burgundy, glacier, silver, and black finishes, with storage options up to 2TB.
Pre-orders begin September 12 at 5:30 PM IST via Apple Stores, Vijay Sales, and Lotus Electronics, with official availability starting September 18 in India and over 65 countries.
The Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro series represents Apple's most significant camera overhaul in years, successfully bridging the gap between smartphone convenience and professional photographic control. The variable aperture system, while not entirely new to mobile (Samsung introduced it years ago), finally brings this crucial creative tool to iPhone users.
For professionals, the combination of manual controls, ProRes 4K120 recording, and the A20 Pro's sustained performance makes these devices genuinely viable as primary shooting tools. The improved battery life and rapid charging address two of the most common complaints about previous models.
However, at Rs 1,64,900 and above, these phones remain premium investments. The question isn't whether they're capable—they clearly are—but whether the average user will utilize enough of these advanced features to justify the cost. For content creators, photographers, and videographers, the answer is unequivocally yes. For everyone else, the standard iPhone 18 (releasing spring 2027) may prove sufficient.
