Telangana Adds 3 More Years to Constable Age Limit, Total Relaxation Now 10 Years

HYDERABAD — The Telangana government on Wednesday issued a landmark order granting an additional three-year age relaxation for direct recruitment to constable and equivalent posts, bringing the total concession to an unprecedented 10 years.

The General Administration (Services-A) Department released G.O.Ms.No.129 on September 10, 2026, signed by Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, specifically targeting the persistent three-year disparity between sub-inspector and constable age limits that has long concerned police recruitment aspirants.

Cumulative Relief Package
This latest relaxation builds upon two previous government orders issued earlier this year. The initial G.O.Ms.No.87, dated May 18, 2026, had granted a five-year age extension, followed by G.O.Ms.No.122 on August 14, 2026, which added another two years across uniformed services.

The cumulative effect means candidates applying for constable positions in the Police, Fire Services, Prisons, and Special Protection Force (SPF) can now avail themselves of a full decade of age relaxation over the standard upper age limit prescribed under special or ad-hoc rules.

Addressing Structural Anomaly
Government sources revealed that the decision stemmed from representations highlighting an anomalous situation where the upper age limit for sub-inspector posts stood at 32 years while constables faced a ceiling of just 29 years—even after the August relaxation.

"This created an illogical hierarchy where candidates eligible for the higher post of SI were automatically disqualified from applying for constable positions if they were between 29 and 32 years," explained a senior Home Department official who requested anonymity.
The latest order rectifies this inconsistency, effectively aligning the maximum age for constable recruitment with that of sub-inspectors at 32 years (before category-wise relaxations).
Constitutional Authority Invoked
Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla exercised powers under Article 309 of the Constitution to issue the temporary relaxation, which applies specifically to recruitments conducted by the Telangana State Level Police Recruitment Board (TSLPRB).

However, the order explicitly excludes police constable driver positions from the additional three-year benefit, maintaining the seven-year relaxation ceiling for that category.

Timeline and Implementation
The relaxation is temporary in nature, valid for one year from the date of notification, consistent with the validity period established in the August order.

This means the enhanced age limit will apply to all TSLPRB notifications issued between September 9, 2026, and September 8, 2027, providing a substantial window for thousands of aspirants who had aged out of eligibility in recent years.
Broader Context
The series of age relaxations reflects the state government's response to mounting pressure from youth organizations and political parties demanding expanded opportunities in government employment. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) had recently urged the ruling Congress government to increase age limits, citing years of unemployment among educated youth.

Telangana now joins several other Indian states that have progressively raised age ceilings for police and uniformed service recruitments as a measure to accommodate candidates who lost years during the pandemic and face intense competition for limited government positions.
Who Benefits?
The order covers constable-equivalent positions across:
Telangana Police (Civil, AR, SAR, OCTEL)
Fire and Rescue Services
Prisons Department
Special Protection Force (SPF)
Excise Department
Transport Department
Forest Department
Candidates who have exhausted previous age limits but fall within the new 10-year relaxation window can now prepare for upcoming TSLPRB notifications without the anxiety of age disqualification.
