A teacher at St Joseph UP School in Kunnoth, near Iritty in Kannur district, has reportedly been temporarily removed from teaching duties following allegations that she mistreated a student who collapsed inside a classroom.
The incident involved a Class 6 girl who reportedly has a recurring health condition. According to reports, the student experienced dizziness before collapsing and losing consciousness in the classroom.
The student's parents have alleged that the teacher, identified in local reports as Lindo Jose, behaved harshly towards the child after she fell. They further alleged that the teacher made an insensitive remark questioning why the student had not died and kicked the child.
The allegations triggered protests and demands from the student's family and others for action against the teacher. (Kerala Kaumudi)
Reports say the school was aware of the student's health problems and had been taking precautions and providing additional attention to her. The teacher, however, had reportedly joined the school only a couple of days before the incident. (Kerala Kaumudi)
The teacher has denied physically assaulting the student. In her explanation, she reportedly said she was unaware of the child's medical condition because she had only recently joined the school and maintained that she had merely reprimanded the student. (Kerala Kaumudi)
The allegations have raised concerns over how schools should respond when students experience sudden medical problems during class.
For the moment, the reported action against the teacher should be viewed as an administrative step pending examination of the allegations. The claims made by the family and the teacher's version should be distinguished until any formal inquiry establishes what occurred.
The incident also highlights the importance of ensuring that teachers and school staff are informed about students who may require special medical attention, particularly when a health emergency occurs on school premises.
