330 Calls, 14 on Murder Day: How Daughter-in-Law and Former Help Planned Kanpur Businessman's Death

KANPUR — A seemingly ordinary daughter-in-law and her former domestic help orchestrated a meticulously planned murder, leaving behind a digital trail of 330 phone calls in just 21 days that ultimately led to their arrest.
The Kanpur Police on Thursday arrested the businessman's daughter-in-law and her accomplice—a former domestic worker—after reconstructing a crime that investigators say was planned over three months with chilling precision.
The Digital Footprint
What began as a routine missing person complaint unraveled into a murder investigation when phone records revealed an extraordinary pattern of communication. The daughter-in-law made 330 calls to the former domestic help between August and early September, with 14 calls placed on the very day of the murder.
"These weren't casual conversations," said a senior police official who requested anonymity. "The frequency and timing suggest coordination, planning, and execution of a premeditated crime."
The Murder Day
On the morning of the fatal incident, the duo allegedly entered the victim's flat disguised as delivery personnel—a ruse that allowed them to bypass security and gain access to the residence.
The businessman, whose identity has been withheld pending family notification, was found dead inside his apartment. Initial reports suggested robbery, but investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies in the crime scene.
CCTV Breaks the Case
Closed-circuit television footage from the building and surrounding areas proved crucial in identifying the suspects. The footage showed two individuals entering the premises in delivery uniforms, their faces partially obscured.
"When we cross-referenced the CCTV timestamps with phone records, the picture became clear," the police official explained. "The calls weren't just communication—they were coordination signals."
Three Months of Planning
Investigators discovered evidence suggesting the murder wasn't spontaneous but carefully orchestrated over approximately 90 days. The daughter-in-law and former domestic help allegedly discussed logistics, timing, and methods during their frequent phone conversations.
Police are examining whether financial disputes, property matters, or personal grievances motivated the crime. The businessman's family has been questioned, though officials have not disclosed specific details about potential motives.
The Accomplice Connection
The former domestic help's relationship with the family remains under scrutiny. Investigators are determining how the daughter-in-law maintained contact with someone no longer employed by the household and why their communication intensified so dramatically in the weeks leading to the murder.
"The 14 calls on the day of the murder tell us this wasn't impulsive," said a crime investigator. "Every call likely served a purpose—confirming plans, checking timing, or coordinating movements."
Reconstruction of Events
Using call detail records, CCTV footage, and witness statements, police reconstructed the timeline:
Three months prior: Planning phase begins, with initial contacts between daughter-in-law and former help
21 days before murder: Call frequency intensifies to 330 calls
Murder day morning: 14 calls placed, suspects enter flat disguised as delivery personnel
Post-crime: Suspects attempt to establish alibis, but digital evidence contradicts their statements
Arrest and Interrogation
Both suspects were arrested after police obtained sufficient evidence linking them to the crime. During preliminary interrogation, they reportedly provided conflicting accounts of their whereabouts on the day of the murder.
Police have seized mobile phones used for the calls and are conducting forensic analysis to recover deleted messages or additional communication records.
Family in Shock
The businessman's family expressed disbelief at the allegations. "We never suspected anything," said a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity. "She seemed like a normal daughter-in-law. We had no idea about any problems or plans."
Legal Proceedings
The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and criminal conspiracy. They will be produced before a magistrate for remand as investigations continue.
Police are examining whether additional accomplices were involved and whether the murder was connected to the businessman's commercial activities or personal relationships.
Digital Evidence in Modern Crime
This case highlights how digital footprints—phone calls, CCTV footage, and electronic communication—have become crucial in solving crimes that might otherwise remain unsolved. The 330 calls that seemed innocuous to the suspects became the very evidence that exposed their plot.
"Today's criminals leave digital trails they don't even realize exist," the investigating officer noted. "What they thought was coordination became their undoing."
