A prosperous medicine trader in Kanpur was found stabbed to death inside his apartment after his family returned from a late-night outing.
Police investigating the killing of Vineet Minocha say the attack took place while his son and daughter-in-law were at a city lounge.
According to investigators, the daughter-in-law, Shalu, had earlier approached a former domestic worker and offered him money to eliminate her father-in-law.
The alleged arrangement involved a substantial cash payment, a duplicate key to the flat, and instructions on how the intruders should gain entry.
On the night of the incident the couple left the residence with their young child and proceeded to a lounge in Tilak Nagar.
Videos recorded at the venue later showed the pair dancing among other guests.
Police claim that even while at the gathering the woman remained in contact with the two men who had entered the apartment and allegedly guided their actions by phone.
The attackers are said to have hidden inside a bedroom and waited for the businessman to return home alone.
When he entered the room the confrontation turned violent; post-mortem examination recorded multiple stab wounds.
The body was discovered in the early hours after the family returned from the party.
Investigators describe the evening outing as an attempt to create distance from the crime scene.
They point to frequent phone contact between the daughter-in-law and the former employee in the weeks leading up to the murder, along with disputes over household finances and surveillance cameras installed inside the home.
Both alleged attackers were arrested following an encounter. The daughter-in-law was taken into custody shortly afterwards.
Police say she has been confronted with call records and statements from the other accused.
The case remains under investigation as officers examine digital evidence, security footage and the sequence of events on the night of the killing.
Further details are expected once the formal charges are framed.
