A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to participating in a cryptocurrency racketeering conspiracy that prosecutors say stole and laundered more than $245 million in digital assets.
Malone Lam, a Singapore citizen who later lived in Miami, admitted his role in the scheme this week in a U.S. court.
The largest single theft involved more than 4,100 Bitcoin taken from a Washington, D.C., resident in August 2024. At the time the coins were valued at roughly $230–245 million.
Prosecutors say members of the group used social engineering tactics, posing as representatives of Google and a major cryptocurrency exchange, to gain access to the victim’s accounts and security codes.
Once the funds were obtained, they were rapidly converted into cash and used to finance an extravagant lifestyle.
Lam and associates purchased more than 30 high-end vehicles, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and custom Porsches. One watch alone cost about $2 million.
They rented luxury homes in Miami and the Hamptons, hired private security, flew on private jets and spent heavily at nightclubs.
In one documented evening in Los Angeles, Lam spent approximately $569,000 at a single club. Group members routinely ran tabs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The spending spree lasted roughly a month before federal agents arrested Lam.
Investigators described the network as having grown from online gaming connections into a structured operation that targeted cryptocurrency holders.
Lam’s guilty plea to a RICO conspiracy count marks a significant development in the broader case, which has involved multiple defendants.
Prosecutors continue to pursue related charges and asset recovery.
The case highlights both the scale of individual cryptocurrency holdings and the risks posed by social-engineering attacks that bypass traditional technical defences.
Further sentencing details for Lam are expected in the coming months.
